Trezor also has 5-star customer support at all times, ready to help in case you come across any issues or need a wallet recovery. Security upgrades and Trezor news are constantly communicated through their integrated app Trezor Suite.

While the Trezor Model One offers a simpler version (but still just as strong); the Trezor Model T has an intuitive and convenient touchscreen interface. Both offer an offline recovery seed, that allows you access to your wallet via your personal 12 to 24 long recovery seed. Trezor is one of the few wallets to have a Shamir backup option which offers even more advantages than a single recovery seed and specifies how many backups you need to be able to restore a wallet. During your Trezor setup, the seed is first generated and is unique to you alone. This offline backup allows you to restore access in case of loss or theft. Many people chose to keep their recovery seeds in safety deposit boxes or places only accessible to them. Trezor, while being unique, is still compatible with many wallet apps. With thousands of coins available, you can’t go wrong with a Trezor Model T.

3)

Ledger

The Ledger Hardware Wallet is trusted by millions and is a reliable budget-friendly option. The lightweight Ledger definitely provides many cool security features. Ledger wallets were the first hardware wallet on the market with certified security by ANSSI, the French cyber security agency. Their website even mentions their attestation process:

“In simple words, every time you use a Ledger device to process a critical action at the firmware level (such as updating the OS, installing or removing apps), an HSM (secure server) will send a challenge to the device (a randomly generated number). This means it is requesting the device to prove its genuineness. The device can prove that it is genuine by providing a correct signature for the challenge.”

Ledger also provides the Ledger Live app as a one-stop-shop for your crypto. Easily buy, sell, exchange and grow your assets with over 50+ compatible wallets. Both the Ledger Nano X and Ledger Nano S do not have full color touchscreens, however both are great for beginners. Simple, but powerful security (Certified secure chip CC EAL5+). While the Nano S only allows up to 3 app installations, the Nano X allows up to 100. The Nano X is the more advanced model and offers a mobile friendly connection and larger screen. Arculus

The American-made Arculus is interesting for its 3-factor authentication process and utilizes “something you are” (Biometric Lock), “something you know” (6-digit Numeric Pin), and “something you have” (Arculus Key Card). The Arculus Key card actually uses Near Field Communication (NFC). This is similar technology to Google Pay & Apple Pay, where you can tap the card to the back of your smartphone to complete the authentication process. The website also boasts a quicker dashboard by offering “tap to transact” interactions which deliver a faster, more responsive experience. Arculus comes at a fair price for a CC EAL6+ Secure Hardware Classification.

The card-like device allows it not to require charging unlike more traditional fob/screen style wallets. There is even a key card version with business capabilities like custom cryptocurrency products, identity/fraud protection, and payments technology. The parent company to Arculus is Compo Secure and they were founded in New Jersey (2020).

Coinkite Coldcard

Another Bitcoin only wallet, however it is powerfully simple. Nothing fancy, just straightforward affordable design meant to do its job. Seed words and private keys are stored in a specialized chip, not the main micro’s flash. This is a great wallet if you ever fear being under duress or threat for your Bitcoin. A really cool feature involves their “Duress PIN” and allows the ability to enter a second PIN that signals a different decoy account to pop up as normal. This can act as a great tool in case you are under duress and there is an active need to hide your main account.

They also have an additional PIN called the “Brick Me PIN” that renders your device completely useless when typed in. The "Countdown to Brick PIN" is a covert variation of the Brick Me PIN mode as it forces a time delay (of minutes/hours/days) when logging into the Coldcard. Similar to Bank's Sages, this allows for plausible deniability and eliminates functional use of the device in case they take it. These are only a few security measures they take to ensure private access to your coins. Probably one of the most creative wallets on the market when it comes to duress game theory.

Key Takeaways

  • Founded in Canada (2012)

  • Bitcoin, Desktop Only

  • Verifiable Open Source Code

  • Easy-to-use

  • Ultra-Secure

  • Multisig option

  • Casa App integration for air gapped transfers of PSBTs (Partially Signed Bitcoin Transactions)

  • Seed words are stored in a specialized chip, not the main micro’s flash.

  • True Air-gap: Hardware wallet with option to never be connected to a computer, for full operation: from seed generation, to transaction signing

  • Large Numeric Keyword allows for easy pin entry

  • “Brick Me PIN” that renders your device completely useless when typed in

  • Duress PIN: If you enter that PIN code, instead of the "real" PIN code, nothing special is shown on the screen and everything operates as normal.

  • "Countdown to Brick PIN" is a covert variation of the Brick me PIN mode as it forces a time delay (of minutes/hours/days) when logging into the Coldcard. Similar to Bank's Sages, this allows for plausible deniability and eliminates functional use of the device in case they take it.

  • Supports BIP39 passphrases (25th word) so you can also create an unlimited supply of alternative wallets.

  • Login Countdown Force: a time delay when logging into the Coldcard. Once enabled, you must enter the PIN correctly, and then wait out a forced delay (of minutes/hours/days) while a countdown is shown on-screen.
